“CONFLICT May Be Intentional Or Unintentional.”
Gloomy Sunday is a song written by Rezso Seress. This song is claimed to be a leading component and the reason behind over 100 suicides. According to Lauren Davis who is the author of “Could This Gloomy Song Really Inspire a Person to Commit Suicide?,” she states, “a shoemaker quoted the song in his suicide note; two people shot themselves while listening to this song; people reportedly drowned themselves in the Danube while holding the sheet music.” There have been various suicides but did the song “Gloomy Sunday” really inspire all these people to commit suicide? Did the song really make people commit suicide or were the people already planning on committing suicide. Did the people who committed suicide get inspired by song while they were listening to it or were already planning on killing themselves? It is unknown what the answer is. Therefore, we decided to research this topic. Sometimes, music is blamed for the violence and conflict that happens. However, is this really a reason or are there other factors that are involved? These are important unanswered questions to ask because they help us understand how complicated this connection between music and violence can be.
“CONFLICT IS Progressive.”
According to an article from livestrong, it states, “But according to researchers at Florida International University, the more time African American adolescents spent watching the sexualized images in in Hip Hop videos, the more likely they were to engage in sexually risky behavior themselves and endorse it in their peers”. This text shows how violent rap can have a negative effect on teens by endorsing sexual conflict and then that can lead to the teen doing things he should not be doing. Another quote from the text states, “Research done at Western Connecticut State University found that those who listen to music with violent lyrics are more likely to be violent”. This shows that the music can affect the mood of the person that listens to the music and that can make the person feel more violent.
“CONFLICT May allow for synthesis or change”
The American Psychological Association, Craig Anderson states that “Some music creates aggressive thoughts as an impact on the artist’s listeners and may change the way people think both aggressively and violently”. Teenagers have committed suicide and killed other people because some claim that a song inspired them to change and act that way. Also, according to Craig Anderson, he states, “Results of the 5 experiments show that violent songs led to more aggressive interpretations of ambiguously aggressive words.” There were experiments made based on music and it’s effect on people and studies show that some music increased aggressive thoughts, two of the experiments made allowed the researchers to test if lyrics of the music would impact the subjects and to test the the differences were not because of the arousal of the subjects. The other three experiments had violent and nonviolent lyrics written in different songs by the same author to test the College Students beliefs in which music lyrics they thought were violent.
“CONFLICT Is composed of opposing forces.”
According to the American Psychological Association, there was a study that was conducted about music and violence. In the study, they found that ”individual personality differences related to hostility were assessed and controlled. The study also included songs with humorous lyrics to see how humor interacted with violent song lyrics aggressive thoughts.” They wanted to see if the lyrics made people violent or the music. This shows that not all music can cause aggressive thoughts because it depends on the lyrics of the songs. If it’s the songs humorous lyrics or if it’s the actual music that can cause or increase aggressive and violent acts.they can have negative outcomes that can involve aggressive thoughts or violent acts. In another source written by Kevin C. Liljequist, a quote states, “Till recently no studies showed cause and effect relationship between music and lyrical content influencing behavior. Now more than one-thousand scientific studies and reviews conclude that significant exposure to violent music and lyrical content increase the risk of aggressive behavior in certain children and adolescents.” This shows that violent or aggressive music can affect a person’s thoughts and it also links with the way that the person thinks when they listen to the music. If a person thinks more aggressively, there is a chance that the person’s way of thinking, can get other people to think that way.
“CONFLICTS May be natural or man-made”.
According to an article written by Herbert A. Friedman, it states, “The use of music in warfare goes back to Biblical times. Joshua won the battle of Jericho using trumpets. The ancient Greeks went to war led by flutists playing songs of patriotism and praising the Gods and their military heroes. Legend says that Athena created the flute to imitate the wailing of the Gorgons when Medusa was killed”. This shows that the music made by the soldiers, was able to put fear into the fear of their enemies when they went to battle. In addition, drums and shouting are part of various wartime rituals across cultures throughout history, which shows the natural connections between war, violence, and music. Conflicts can also be man-made because the music itself is created by man, and today’s “violent” music is also constructed and designed by man. The beat and tones of the music is also man-made. Therefore, the idea of music being connected to violence is both natural and man-made.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, it states, “Analysis of the content in music videos is important because research has reported that exposure to violence, sexual messages, sexual stereotypes, and use of substance abuse in music videos might produce significant changes in behaviors and attitudes of young viewers. Frequent watching of music videos has been related to an increased risk of developing beliefs in false stereotypes and an increased perceived importance of appearance and weight in adolescent girls.” People who watch music videos with sexual messages or music with sexual music won’t make that person sexual but study shows that sexual music videos can increase or cause how someone acts or what they think about. This means that there are still connections between what music is about, and what people think about. This does not necessarily mean that a person will act exactly like what they hear or see, but the music will impact the person’s thoughts.
Impact
According to American Psychological Association: “Violent Music Lyrics Increase Aggressive Thoughts and Feelings” Craig Anderson states, “The violent-song increases in aggressive thoughts and feelings have implications for real world violence, according to lead researcher Craig Anderson Ph.D of Iowa State University, who states that music is a small component of violence but many yet claim that it impacts individuals.” Studies say that violent music can increase negative thoughts. There’s also some music that people claim that the song inspired them to kill or people have committed suicide because of music. If you listen to this music, you don’t go kill or commit suicide. The music is just a small component of violence.

Driving Question
To what extent does music influence the motives of individuals towards deadly conflicts,
Reflection#3
So far, we have learned the mistakes that we did on our board. We finally got our board approved and we turned it in already. All we have to do now is to finish the creative piece.
Reflection#2
What we have learned so far is that our topic is more than just music and violence, it also shows how music can be blamed for violent things that have happened. What I have learned about my group is that we have to turn things in really fast and always be on task. We have to get our SLR plan approved and we also have to finish our ISD. Also, we have to finish our board plan because it is due on Friday. This project can be hard because we are under so much pressure and we specific dates of when to turn something in.
Gate Symposium Reflection
I learned that for our topic, music and violence, music is being blamed for bad things that happen. I also learned that people should not be blamed for things that happen. We kept our topic but then we had to find out more research. We used the topic conflict. We hope to find if music is related to any of the causes that say is caused by music.
